Well even if you use AP, you need a passport, dont you? And the passport must be with the Consulate pending stamping. So one way to get the passport back is to withdraw the visa application.
A question though: is'nt it abandoning your H1B1 visa tenure if you enter on AP even with a valid H1B remaining?
I don't know if procedures are different in the consulates..In my country you apply for H1B visa ,they interview you and tell you that you will be granted a visa so we will call you when stamp is ready...you take your paaport and yoiu go home and whenever they call you for stamping you bring your passport and stamp it the same day...Are procedures different these days?

For the benefit of all. There is another way to know receipt number and it is valid only if you have given your own personal checks to USCIS. When the check is cleared from the bank, they make image of check available on their on line banking web site. The image shows front of the check; page down here and see the back side of the check. You will find all your receipt numbers on the back side.

Our cases were approved on Sep 21, 2010. Received approval notices on Sep 25, 2010. But did not get the Cards yet. I am planing to travel next week. So I went to local USCIS office and got the I-551 stamp on my passport. Can you guys suggest me what other documents I need to take along with me if I don't receive the cards by the time I leave. Also pls let me how long will it takes to receive the cards.

In filing for I-485 no one has mentioned copy of I-140 or copy of Labor cert.
My question is how does USCIS tally an AOS application to an already approved I-140 or labor certifcation and find out the PD for the application?
If you read the instructions, it states clearly that you need to proivde a copy of your approved immigrant petition.

What Pappu says is right. Ppl have been so impatient that they're bombarding USCIS with SRs, emails, letters from attorneys, Infopass etc..etc...etc...I understand the anxiety but isnt this a bit 2 much? I was no exception to this. I raised an SR on the very first day my date got current and on trying to followup on the SR the very next week, I stumbled upon a clearly tired second level IO who didn't like the way I was pushing for it. He clearly explained to me that there was no need to worry as the dates were current and everyone who was current and cleared of security would be approved as there were several visa numbers available and he also told me that there have been thousands of calls received everyday and its becoming really hard for them to handle the situation. I could see how tired and frustrated he was. I immediately understood their plight and just waited without any further action and within a span of 15 days after that call, I got my approval. My attorney also advised me to wait as he was sure the dates were gonna be current the next month as well and followups would only result in delays.
Well I'm not saying its wrong to be anxious. Ofcourse, its an important milestone, one that secures our future in this country and yes, its only natural to be anxious. But being anxious doesn't mean that by calling or emailing or Ombudsman etc...ur case will be approved. Try and put yourselves in the IO's shoes as well. For a moment think what it wud be like to be an USCIS first lvl/second lvl IO receiving the same call every minute from a diff person and each one trying to reach the second lvl IO with lies such as my A# on file is diff than the one on 140 OR address change etc...etc...This is ridiculous. After years of wait we resort to such shameful behavior towards the end.
Yes when others with later PDs are getting approved and u r still waiting, it does bring out frustration in u. But u should also put in thought as to why that could be. Maybe one of the security checks in ur case is awaited or maybe ur file is on some table waiting to be picked up etc...I was venting out my anger and frustration during my wait on this forum and ppl were only asking me to do that, do this blah blah blah. I just waited nevertheless as I knew the moment I spoke with the IO that there was really no point in following up as cases were getting approved and USCIS was definitely WORKING as hard as they could (even on weekends) to clear all current cases.
There was one dumb idiot who called and spoke to the second level IO (per his own words "just to confirm") even after getting the CPO email. I mean how foolish and idiotic is that. It simply means that USCIS is hell bent on clearing all the cases which have been current since July and my best guess is until the last of the "current" cases has been approved, the dates will be not be retrogressed.
i understand everybit you explained here but your missing human anxiousness whether it is GC or OC(no meaning) people willnot stop doing enquiry i think you might did to and being hypocritic that everyone is anxious about doing so the explaination looks like your working in uscis customer care and taking care of all this everyone knows that uscis doesnot only deals GC and not only we are calling them

L1 Blanket visa, from the a very reputed company, Jan 16th interview, visa was approved (i.e. no 221g), no information from Consulate, no idea as to what is delaying the stamping.

It is not good disparaging the countries needing TV by calling them idiotic and asking for boycott etc. Please know that you are living in a country (USA) which is far worse than those "idiotic" countries in this respect since 2003. US needs C1 visa for transiting through its airports even when you have a valid VISA stamp in your passport to a destination country and you need to fill eqaully gruelling application (DS 156). guys, i am now in UK and it's night time but trying to call as many as possible.
also asked friends & family (in US) to start calling.
can someone PLEASE start a email campaign (Yes, a chain letter) to at least the DESI community.
This is a great chance for a BIG step forward and many of you have worked VERY hard (which has motivated me also, else i had lost hope).

My wife got the approval on Oct 5th...CPO mail was first followed by approval notice and I also got a CPO mail after 35 days of approval....strange and surreal it seems

I may be wrong since my wife's case was separated.....But this was from my congressman's office who told me that the reason that her case is pending and delayed is because our case got separated during adjudication.

You finally completed the long journey by receiving your wife's approval also. A big relief, right? As I have gone through the same situation, I know the pain to get through it. You have lots of patience for trying out all avenues.

Good that we provide what are all the various ways we tried to get it through. (Even nitty gritty details like which day and time the Immigration Officers generally will be in a good mood to hear us - Yes its true that our situation without GC is that pathetic). It might be so helpful for others who are still waiting to deal effectively with these officers. During my conversation with one IO, she told me the IO's ID who is reviewing my kid's file and asked me to send a detailed mail to that IO.

Yes , I did see that, but at what point do they consider this as "inventory" -- waiting for visa having pre-adjudicated (gosh, I hope not!) or as we all are thinking -- applications that have reached the agency...

I am upto 14 letters signed, sealed and mailed to the President. I am waiting on a few more to come....It took probably an hour over the past week. Guess what...in the process I educated over 20 Americans about our issues. Guys this can have a cascading effect if we talk to people we know and get these letters. We all need to step up and actively talk to all Americans we know and get these letters. They are our support bank when its time for larger fixes and we need Americans to call their Congressman & Senators to help us.
Talk to EVERYONE you know and get a letter signed. It would be great if everyone mentioned the number of letters they have got when they put out posts on this thread. Lets not just talk the talk but WALK the TALK!!!:D
